GnuCash is free accounting software and a personal finance management program for households and small businesses in the United Arab Emirates. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it is licensed under the GNU GPL.
Use it the way you would use a cheque register, with the discipline of double-entry accounting behind it. Record salary, rent, school fees, card payments, and business invoices in UAE dirhams (AED), then open a report to see income, expenses, and what is left in each account.
This page is written for readers in the UAE. The same program is maintained by volunteers worldwide. If you want to help the project, see these suggestions.
Personal finance management in the UAE
Many residents in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the other emirates keep more than one account: a salary account, a savings account, a credit card, and sometimes a transfer to family overseas. A personal finance program puts those movements in one book, so a month of spending is not scattered across bank apps and spreadsheets.
GnuCash is built for that day-to-day record. You enter each deposit and payment once. The register shows the running balance, and the reports show where the money went.
- Track bank and cash accounts in AED
- Split household costs such as rent, utilities, groceries, transport, and school fees
- Follow credit-card charges and the payment that clears them
- Schedule rent, loans, and other bills that repeat every month
- Review income and expenses for a month, a quarter, or a year
Accounting for freelancers and small businesses
A consultancy, a shop, or a freelance practice still needs orderly books. GnuCash uses double-entry accounting, so every transaction stays in balance: money never appears in one account without leaving another. That is the same method accountants use, in a program you can run on your own computer.
Small-business tools in the program include customer invoices, vendor bills, and a chart of accounts you can shape to the work you do. Reports and graphs turn those entries into a picture of profit, expenses, and unpaid bills. You can also keep stocks, bonds, or mutual funds if part of your money is invested.
VAT records for UAE businesses
The standard VAT rate in the United Arab Emirates is 5 percent. The Federal Tax Authority oversees registration, returns, and record keeping. GnuCash can store a tax rate on sales and purchases and list tax collected and tax paid in a report.
Those books are a practical starting point when you or your tax agent prepare a VAT return. The program does not file the return with the Federal Tax Authority. Keep sales invoices, purchase invoices, and the dates required by the law, and ask a registered agent when your turnover or your activity means you must be registered.
Who this accounting program is for
- Households that want one personal finance management program instead of loose spreadsheets
- Employees who want a clear view of salary, allowances, and monthly costs in AED
- Freelancers and small companies that need accounting software without a subscription
- Anyone who wants income, expense, and balance reports to share with an accountant in the UAE
How to start your books
- Download GnuCash for Windows, macOS, or Linux from the box on this page.
- Create a new book and set the default currency to AED.
- Add accounts for your bank, cash, credit card, income, and the expenses you want to watch.
- Enter transactions as they happen, or import a file if your bank provides OFX or QIF.
- Open the income and expense reports and check that the balances match your statements.
Bank statement import depends on the file your bank gives you. If a UAE bank only offers PDF or CSV, you can still type the transactions, or convert the file before import. Matching imported rows to entries you already typed is one of the built-in tools.
Questions about accounting and personal finance in the UAE
- Is GnuCash accounting software or a personal finance program?
- It is both. Households use it to manage personal finances. Small businesses use it as accounting software, with invoices, bills, and double-entry books.
- Can I keep the books in UAE dirhams?
- Yes. Choose AED as the currency for the book. You can also record another currency if you are paid or you spend money outside the UAE, and the reports can show the result in dirhams.
- Does it file VAT with the Federal Tax Authority?
- No. It stores the transactions and the tax amounts so you can prepare figures. Sending the return to the Authority remains your responsibility.
- What does the program cost?
- Nothing. GnuCash is free software. Download the Windows, macOS, or Linux edition and use it without a subscription.
- Which download should I use on a PC in the UAE?
- For Windows 8, 10, or 11, use the Windows button on this page. That file is GnuCash 5.16. Older Windows versions need an older release, linked under the download box.
- Can more than one person look at the same accounts?
- The file is yours to store and copy. Many families and small offices keep the book on a shared computer or a private copy. It is not an online bank, and it does not move money.
